Dear Jalal, I reached the flame and tried a lot there but could not succeed. can you please help, either the prince got burnt in the flame or he dropped below the lantern (mashal). I reached the flame somewhere 6 years ago, and being frustated, I left playing the game. But now I feel some of these forum members can help me.
Just before you reach the flame there is a warning on the wall that talks about dieing. This is not a threat - it is a clue. You must die to continue with the game. When you reach the flame, allow the guard there to kill the Prince. A Spirit will rise from his body and touch the flame. The Prince is now a super being and the guards will bow down to him. Now go right and jump back over the gap and go out the level exit door to the next level.

I have played this game like mad, but thats not true.
You have to jump on the platform where the flame is, simply jump back. Thats how you get the fireball to kill the vizier in the end. If you let the gaurd near the flame kill you, you simply die and have to play all over again.
There are two ways to get the flame. As vdirjohn described, that's the normal way. Another way is to turn into the shadow (or without doing so if I am not mistaken) and jump on the platform (first title is a door switch) and exit the level... I am new to this forum and am a great fan of POP 1 & 2. In fact the only computer games I ever played are POP and Wolfenstien. I really enjoyed them.
Now coming back to the topic. The versions I have played and what I have even now, you have to simply jump on to the platform of the flame and jump back. You let yourself killed, you simply die.
Of course I admit that I haven't tried becoming a shadow and going there. But if I did become a shadow, then the guards won't be able to see me, hence no question of getting killed by them.
So, please tell me how do you do it? I am asking because I am really curious.

I waited for the last guard to kill me & all I can do is start at the begining of the level. This is at the flame screen. This is how I know and how I played. How do I make it happen the way you describe?

One more time:
Go to the screen with the flame. When the guard notices you, let him kill you and make sure you don't die at the previous screen. Good way to ensure that is to put your sword away and jump in the air. So, you die, you hear the death music, and after that you should see the shadow leaving body.
