Personally I think it's a lot more fun and challenging to make the effort and find all the upgrades... If you can't find them all it's OK to use a walkthrough to find them, as long as you still use your own skills to get there.
If you find it boring or a chore to finish the whole thing maybe you just need to find something else to play. For me it was like the best part of the whole thing.
