For those who don't know, there are two demo versions of PoP 2.

First one is version 1.0 (1993) (First official demo by Brøderbund Software)
Download: http://www.funet.fi/pub/msdos/games/demos/prince2.zip

Second one is version 1.1 (1998) (The one released within Prince of Persia Collection Limited Edition by Red Orb Entertainment - It has sound setup...)
Download: http://files.filefront.com/prince2zip/;6964150;/fileinfo.html (or http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/prince2.zip)

3. Troubleshooting

Windows(R) 95/98

Question: My computer hangs when I start playing the Prince of Persia 2 Demo.

Answer: This is probably the result of an IRQ or a DMA conflict.

Since the original Prince of Persia games were DOS-based, it is possible
that some of today's Plug and Play sound components may not be correctly
configured by Windows 95 / Windows 98 to take advantage of DOS sound
settings. In some instances, this problem can be fixed by manipulating your
Prince of Persia Setup settings.

To modify your Prince of Persia Setup settings, execute the following
steps:

1.) Start at the Windows 95 desktop
2.) Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory where you saved the demo.
3.) Open up the game folder of the Prince game you want to play
4.) Within the Demofolder, double click the Setup.exe file
5.) With the Sound Device item highlighted, strike the Enter Key
6.) Choose SoundBlaster Pro
7.) Make a note of your current settings
8.) Press "M" to modify settings
9.) Leave your IO port address at 220H
10.) Leave you IRQ setting at autodetect
11.) At the DMA selection screen, choose a different DMA

After you have chosen a different DMA, try launching the Demo again.
If the problem still isn't fixed, select the third DMA option. If that still
doesn't fix the problem, restore your original DMA setting, and go back to
the IRQ settings screen and step through the different IRQ's. Try launching
the Demo after modifying each IRQ settings.

If you have followed the above instructions, and your computer continues to
hang when launching the Demo, you may need to re-assign your
IRQ's and/or DMA's in your Windows 95 system control panel.
To do this, consult your Windows95 documentation or online help.

Question: When I start playing the Prince of Persia 2 Demo, the
game runs in a DOS window

Answer: To fix this problem, hold down the Alt key and strike the Enter
key on your keyboard. This will maximize the game window, causing it to
run in full-screen mode.

Question: When playing the Prince of Persia 2 Demo, there are no
digital sound effects and/or digital music

Answer: Your sound card may not be 100% SoundBlaster compatible. Some cards
claim 100% SoundBlaster compatibility but in practice their SoundBlaster
emulation modes do not always work correctly. You can try to get the latest
drivers from your sound cards' manufacturer. If that fails, you can
play the Prince of Persia 2 Demo with the PC speaker.

Some sound cards our testing lab noticed problems with are listed below

-Gravis Ultrasound
-ESS ES 1888

So the first PoP2 demo (1.0) never had any setup files in the first place? Are you sure about this?

Yeah, I think so.

All 1.0 DEMOs I've found don't have any setup files. For, I think you can't hear any real music unless you buy it Wink.

I wonder why I never thought of this before? It just occurred to me that there was an easy way to confirm whether the PoP 2 Demo (v1.0) had Setup.exe and Setup.cfg included with it originally or not.

If you run Setup.exe included with any other version, it creates Setup.dat and Config.dat files in the game directory. Without Config.dat, the game won't run.

I saw that Config.dat was included with the PoP 2 Demo (v1.0) you've uploaded here. So I went to its directory, deleted the file and ran the game. Sure enough, it flashed the familiar error message telling me to run Setup first. So obviously, IMO, the setup files must have been included with the game. What do you think, Jalal?

Also, can you kindly help me with the missing pieces in my Collection so I can finally forget about it? (Unfinished business bugs me otherwise! Wink). I'm pretty sure from your previous posts that you have with you items 2. and 3. from my list here, and maybe the others too:

http://popuw.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2037

Thanks for the help! Smile

I once played a demo on DOSBox and finished the first level. Then came that level end music and the background music continued. When I pressed Alt+N, the bad end sequence came (or at least there stood "THE END")

BtW, who needs a demo, when the full-versio is out, already? Wink

True, the full versions were released decades ago, but completists still like to have all versions with them. I'm still looking for someone who can help me out though...

It is possible that it was set up especially for the demo... Notice that all the files are: "Wednesday, April 21, 1993, 1:00:00 AM". So people have to use this Config.dat file.

It's not the bad end, it's a message saying:

THE END
NOT!
